Liz Mendez

Elizabeth Mendez has gained a reputation for her unwavering commitment to hospitality throughout the Chicago restaurant scene. At a young age Mendez was the consummate assistant to her family's dinner parties and the zeal to truly take care of guests continues today. While financing her education and eventual degree in Communications at DePaul University, Mendez began to wait tables at some of Chicago's most well- known restaurants, the passion of the food and wine bug hit and Mendez never looked back. Mendez brought over fifteen years of experience to the table when joining the opening management team at the hugely popular Carnivale, where she presided over the wine and service program as Sommelier and Wine Director. At Carnivale, Mendez worked with her husband, Executive Chef Mark Mendez, to create a wine program that was food friendly, highlighting wines that accentuated the seasonal and locally influenced Latin cuisine. In 2011 Elizabeth Mendez continued on in her hospitality journey with her husband, opening Vera Wine Bar and Restaurant, in Chicago’s red hot West Loop, to curate a renowned and extensive Sherry list, highlighting the restaurant’s locally focused and Spanish inspired cuisine. While continuing to teach and lead her team at Vera in all aspects of food, wine, service and overall hospitality, Mendez is dedicated to giving back to the wine community through consulting and educational travel including joining the staff and volunteer wine team at TEXSOM, one of the country’s top beverage educational conferences. Among multiple accolades, September of 2014 brought Mendez and her beverage program at Vera the honor of being selected as one of the top wine bars in the country. Elizabeth’s dedication to excellence in wine and hospitality captured the attention of the Jean Banchet Awards, as she was named Best Sommelier in 2016. Today, Elizabeth takes her hospitality focus into the realm of freelance and consulting work, growing and building businesses within the food and beverage industry.
